Job Summary:

The Nicholas Center for Corporate Finance and Investment Banking at the Wisconsin School of Business seeks a Director to further its mission of developing the strategic finance leaders of the future. The center offers corporate finance and investment banking MBA students an opportunity to work directly on a variety of real world corporate finance problems and teaches students how to apply technical and theoretical financial tools and frameworks to analyze unstructured problems, improve decision making and development strategic recommendations.

The Center Director is responsible for administration of the center, student services (including mentoring, placement, center culture), teaching the applied projects course and potentially other finance courses at the undergrad and/or graduate level, engaging the executive advisory board and center/school alumni, connecting with industry partners for projects and student placement, and maintaining relevance in industry through a variety of interactions.
The director reports to the Nicholas Center Faculty Director and partners with numerous internal and external constituents.

Principal duties include the following:

  • Instructional activity
    • Work directly with Academic Director of the center to design learning experiences with complementary academic and industry perspectives on the field of Corporate Finance and Investment Banking
    • Work in coordination with Academic Director, the Finance Department Chair and the center Academic Policy Committee to design and deliver in-depth learning activities with complimentary academic and industry perspectives on the fields of Corporate Finance, Consulting, and Investment Banking. This includes:
      • Teaching the projects course for second year MBA students in the Corporate Finance and Investment Banking program.
      • Sourcing applied industry projects for the student experience and oversee the execution of projects, ensuring a successful learning experience for students and value for industry partners
      • Coordinating applied learning activities for MBA and other students who are affiliated with the center
      • Recruiting, preparing, organizing and coordinating industry representatives for delivery of applied learning engagements; brief representatives on learning objectives and plan delivery of material
      • Incorporating diversity and inclusion into learning activities, where appropriate
      • Conducting occasional applied learning sessions for undergraduate students
      • Leading site visits and field trips focused on industry-specific learning
      • Serving as advisor for relevant student clubs
    • Work in coordination with staff and leadership in the other centers to design and deliver activities (as above) designed to facilitate joint learning between students of both centers
    • Draw on research and scholarly activities among Finance Department Faculty and in other relevant academic areas to build integrative learning experiences for students
      • Facilitate student-faculty discussions of faculty research with industry applications
      • Facilitate faculty-industry discussions to promote and develop research
    • Design and deliver learning activities with emphasis on Corporate Finance and Investment Banking to bring learning to students across programs beyond the center
      • Occasional applied learning sessions designed to appeal to MBA students more broadly
      • External audiences, including active professionals, alumni, and industry partners
      • Explore opportunities in executive education in cooperation with the Center for Professional and Executive Development
    • Teach section(s) of graduate or undergraduate courses in the Finance department, with responsibility for course development, assessments and grading, office hours and course website
  • Student service
    • Partner with Full-time MBA Program Office on MBA recruiting and admissions activity
      • Review candidates and interview selected candidates for MBA admissions
      • Participate in and direct activities designed to attract outstanding students to the center
      • Make recommendations on admission decisions
      • Serve as first point of contact for current students for industry-specific information and advising Design center-specific student orientation experiences
      • Lead portions of orientation program
      • Coordinate with other staff on relevant elements of orientation
    • Advise on financial awards and scholarships
      • With support of MBA Program Office, Financial Management, and Human Resources
    • Mentor and coach students with focus on substantive preparation for professional roles in Corporate Finance and Investment Banking
      • Partner with FTMBA Career Coach to supplement and support coaching activities
      • Provide individual feedback to students
      • Develop and facilitate small-group feedback and learning
    • Design and deliver leadership and professional development training specific to the field of Corporate Finance and Investment Banking
      • Coordinate with MBA and BBA Program Offices to complement offerings
      • Coordinate with other centers/specializations as appropriate
    • Work with academic program offices to enhance placement opportunities
      • Communicate on aspects of externally focused activities related to placement
      • Plan activities that link instruction to placement opportunities
      • Serve as link between advisory board and program offices for communication on placement
    • Administrative management
      • Day to day oversight of the Center for Corporate Finance and Investment Banking
        • Primary contact person for information about the scope and activities of the center
        • Administer Executive in Residence program and partner with the center Executive in Residence to ensure optimal engagement and opportunities for students, board members, and alumni
    • Represent center and coordinate activities with relevant academic programs
      • Work with Academic Director to direct and plan activities for research and knowledge sharing
      • Finance Department and Center Academic Policy Committee
      • Assistant Dean for Knowledge Centers
      • School Program Offices
      • Other programs and executive education
      • Participate in regular program-, department-, and school-wide meetings and other initiatives to align and coordinate activity
    • Work in collaboration with staff directors of other centers
      • Work in collaboration with staff directors of other centers
      • Occasional coordination of activities with other centers on initiatives and projects
    • Serve as the Center's primary external liaison with alumni, industry, and advisory board
      • Recruit high-level managers to serve on the Center's Executive Advisory Board and expand industry representation to include more corporate finance and investment banking representatives
      • Develop and administer engagement opportunities at the intersection of research, learning, and practice.
      • Coordinate with the School's alumni and corporate relations
      • Proactively seek and build relationships with companies to recruit Nicholas Center students for project work, summer internships, and full- time employment
      • Facilitate research projects between faculty members of the Finance department and industry partners
      • Represent the Center at industry and academic conferences and professional associations, as appropriate
    • Manage center finances
      • Lead center budgeting
      • Oversee processing and payments of Center-related invoices
      • Provide financial oversight and report to Academic Director
    • Oversee operational activities
      • Manage space, equipment, and technology in the center
      • Gather and synthesize information to develop reports/communications for program
      • Supervise Assistant Director
    • In coordination with central services, participate in design of communications materials
      • Advise on and produce content for marketing materials to prospective students
      • Oversee and advise on content for Center website
    • Serve as primary external liaison for the Center with alumni, industry and advisory board
      • In coordination with alumni and corporate relations
    • Other duties as assigned

Responsibilities:

Provides classroom, online, and/or laboratory instruction associated with more than one lecture or laboratory course, assists with the design and execution of administrative functions associated with academic instruction and the development of pedagogy/andragogy or assessment tools and resources to support quality student learning. Provides for-credit instruction in formats such as classroom, online and/or laboratory settings, including grading. Serves as an instructor of record.

  • 10% Designs curriculum and/or techniques for instruction in a disciplinary area and suggests new ways of effective instruction in courses within that discipline
  • 5% Assesses learner performance and prepares reports recommending instructional improvements
  • 5% Develops teaching techniques that enhance course effectiveness in alignment with desired outcomes and established strategy and trains faculty and other instructional staff in use of said instructional techniques and programs
  • 5% Presents evaluations of teaching methods and techniques to those in the institution and elsewhere
  • 15% Provides classroom, online and/or laboratory instruction, including grading
  • 10% Supervises the day-to-day activities of work unit employees involved in instructional support as needed
  • 15% May administer budget and personnel for instructional grants and programs
  • 15% Assists in defining the objectives of the program and plays a major role in carrying out program duties
  • 20% Manages center day-to-day operations, serves as its primary representative, develops and fosters relationships with stakeholders/external partners. Works with academic program offices to enhance student placements. Develops policies and procedures.

Required:

At least 5 years of experience, including substantial responsibility for major financing and/or strategic investment initiatives, including interfacing with company management at the CFO / CEO level. Individual must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills and be committed to a high level of student focus and support. Candidate should also have excellent organizational, relational, and time management skills.

Preferred:

CFO or Finance leadership experience including interactions with Boards of Directors
