DUTIES
AND
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Assist the Director of Bands with selection, writing, designing, and development of programs and music for half-time and pre-game performances at football games. Assist with continual development of an outstanding band program.
2. Actively recruit prospective students for the band and Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College.
3. Promote retention strategy to maintain healthy student enrollment level fall to spring.
4. Assist the Director of Bands with creating and teaching routines to the band and auxiliary groups.
5. Assist with the coordination, direction, and supervision of the band and auxiliary groups.
6. Teach courses as required and assigned by Dean of Teaching and Learning. Load will vary and can include regular and non-traditional classes, including classes during the day, evenings, weekends, on-line, and on other MGCCC campuses. Classes shall be met when scheduled and for entire period of time scheduled.
7. Maintain proper records of inventory, scholarships, long and short-range plans, budget request, purchasing, etc.
8. Assist in the responsibility for all instruments, uniforms, band equipment etc.
9. Teach and assume responsibility for performance groups (jazz band, ensembles, pep band, winter guard, rifles, concert band, marching band, color guard, etc.) as assigned by Dean of Teaching and Learning.
10. Responsibilities include parades, festivals, Christmas lighting, and performances throughout the year for the College, community activities, and tours to area high schools.
11. Work with the Director of Bands on Strategic Initiatives, Planning documents, Student Learning Outcomes, etc.
12. Work with the Director of Bands and chairperson for the School of Visual & Performing Arts in the continued evaluation and improvement of Fine Arts curriculum. Update syllabi annually.
13. Maintain a familiarity with learning resources services available to Fine Arts and make recommendations for LRC improvements via the Fine Arts department chair.
14. Strive to better understand the students’ learning styles and work to improve teaching methods, content, and value of each course taught.
15. Provide students with course of study and course objectives/SLO’s that have been approved by the School chair and the Dean of Teaching and Learning.
16. Attend all departmental and general faculty meetings.
17. Serve on college committees as assigned.
18. Establish, post, and maintain office hours as directed by college policy.
19. Counsel with students and refer to appropriate college personnel as needed.
20. Work to maintain proper public relations with the community.
21. Complete professional development (EDP) units as required.
22. Responsible for all aspects of Band related activities including pep-band, jazz-band classes and
performances (half-time show, parades, etc.) as required by the Director of Bands, chairperson for the School of Visual & Performing Arts, and campus/college administration.
23. Along with the Director of Bands, be accountable for student advisement for all Band students (all 3 band directors will provide intrusive advisement for Band of Gold (BOG) students).
24. Assist the Director of Bands with execution of all aspects of the BOG members (students).
25. Assist the Director of Bands with the annual ‘Gold Medal Classic’ event including pre-planning, calendar, etc.
26. Assist the Director of Bands with all aspects of the ‘half-time band show’ including music selection, marching routine, etc.
27. Equally responsible, along with the Director of Bands, for the entire BOG inventory; a complete BOG inventory will need to be conducted during each Fall AND Spring semesters (twice-a-year).
28. Responsible for teaching private lessons as assigned by the chairperson for the School of Visual & Performing Arts.
29. Assist the Director of Bands in maintaining an up-to-date file for each BOG student to include copies of at least the following: Band application, Band contract, Advisement/Graduation Checklist, Scholarship letter, any discipline information, Instrument loan form, etc.
30. Assist the Director of Bands with maintaining all aspects of the BOG budget including frugal and proactive purchasing decisions.
31. Assist the Director of Bands with the BOG student club account including fund-raising activities and maintaining healthy account balance.
32. Assist the Director of Bands with auditions, Band Camp, etc.
33. Assist the Director of Bands with managing the Band Scholarship process including submitting scholarship list to Fine Arts Administrative Assistant in a timely manner.
34. Perform other duties as requested by chairperson for the School of Visual & Performing Arts, Dean of Teaching and Learning, and/or Vice President.

Mandatory Qualifications
M(1) Master’s degree in music or music education with an emphasis in instrumental music from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning.
M(2) Demonstrated achievements in designing and preparing marching band shows and parades.
M(3) Ability to teach applied music lessons in one or more of the following areas: high-brass/low-brass.
M(4) Excellent recruiting skills.
M(5) Excellent written and interpersonal communication skills.
M(6) Familiarity with basic internet, e-mail, and word processing.

D(5) Ability to write drill and arrange music for halftime performance.
